A Pattern 1888 bayonet. Still in use in early WWI with the 'old contemptibles' in the BEF who fought at Mons and after in 1914 as many men were still armed with the Long Lees rather than SMLEs. The bayonets were shorter since the Long-Lee and Martini were longer guns and only a shorter bayo was needed to win a bayonet battle with a French or German armed with a long bayonet. The longer 1907 was introduced to compensate for the shorter SMLE to allow the same stabbing length against an enemy armed with the longer Lebel or G98 rifles.
This example is in very good condition. The bayonet is dated 1900, with ordnance stamps and with a crown with a VR. The hilt carries the number 764. The bayonet comes complete with its scabbard with both the leather and steel components in good strong condition. An excellent complement for a Long-Lee.
