C329 - WW2 BSA 'Airborne Bicycle' - The folding Paratroopers Bike
The folding BSA bicycle was produced to a ministry contract, and was based on a sound idea for an Airborne Folding Bicycle.
The concept being, to provide instant mobility for airborne troops, either dropped by parachute, or by airborne assault in gliders. Many trials were undertaken, with the bicycle grasped to the chest, and once under the umbrella, it was lowered on the toggle rope, so as not to interfere with the landing. The concept proved, orders were placed with BSA (British Small Arms) in Birmingham, and over 70,000 were produced.
By D-day, it was elected to issue them to troops as they disembarked on the Normandy Beaches. Thus the Airborne bicycle played a major part in the liberation of Europe in 1944, and examples can be seen in photographs in many aspects of the war, from Normandy through to Arnhem, and are often seen carried in Jeeps and on tanks.
They were produced in two colours, green and the much rarer brown. the change being brought about by nothing more than shortage of green paint.
Most of the Airborne bicycles seem to be in green. After the war, they were sold, and became widely know as the 'Parabike', and many found their way for sale into a commercial envioronment. The first action mainly being to replace the folding pedals with ordinary ones, in order to make them more rideable.
This example is in the rare original brown wartime finish, and is unrestored. It is complete with broad arrow, and original BSA crossed rifle transfers. It has the rare original folding pedals, the correct brakes, brake levers, and all the small details are unmolested. The only departures being a replacement, but old (Wrights) leather saddle of the correct type, and replacement tyres. However, very few are ever seen with BSA saddles, as they do not seem to survive the years. The grips are also a later replacement.
That said, this bicycle's condition has to be seen to be believed in it's unrestored and unmarked BSA brown paintwork, complete with stencilling, and is a very rare museum quality artefact. Any collector of airborne equipement would wait many years to find another in similar condition.
They are very rare to find in unrestored condition, even rarer in brown, and this bicycle must be seen.
