Description
The WW2 German MGZ40 Optical Sight was intended for use with both the MG34 and MG42 machine guns, whilst mounted on a Lafette tripod in a heavy machine gun mode. It was an improvement over the earlier MGZ34 scope, in that the ocular was positioned lower, to allow the gunner to keep a lower profile whilst aiming.
This set consists of the main scope, manufactured by Voigtlaender and Sohn, Braunschweig, with wartime code ddx. The scope is in working order, painted in ordnance tan which is in very good condition.
The scope has serial number 321708 and there is also a cross present, indicating packing with grease that could be used down to -40 degrees Celsius. It is complete with its spirit levels, which function without problem and rubber eyepiece. All adjustment drums function smoothly and the optics are a slightly hazy but usable. There is some external rusting to the side adjustment dial of the scope and the quick release lever needs freeing.
The scope is complete with its original MGZ40 steel carrying case also finished in tan paint. Complete with 2 yellow optical filters. It has the designation MGZ40 painted in black on the top of the case and is Waffenamt with maker code bnm. The locking mechanism is coded frn42. All internal fittings are present. One of the rear canvas loops has broken away from the back but is still present with the set. The case come with its original carrying strap which is in good condition.
Also included with the set is a spare MGZ40 main optic part, made by Emil Busch, with wartime maker code cxn and serial number 215060. Externally the scope is excellent with working parts and spirit levels, but internally the mirrors and lenses are missing or broken.
These are getting very hard to find and and this represents a great set with spare sight body for renovation.
